Abstract

Lajos Csia (1887–1962) was a Hungarian Reformed (Calvinist) pastor, church writer, Bible translator and Bible scholar. His profound knowledge of the biblical languages, many other Eastern and European languages, his in-depth study of the Bible and his overview of universal cultural history, enriched Hungarian theological literature with unique works of great value for today’s readers, too. Lajos Csia left behind a vast oeuvre: some 300-400 writings, among them dozens of booklength works. In his works, he does not simply comment on and explain the Bible, but also provides explanation of the world based on the Bible. This paper that is an overview of the life and work of Lajos Csia deals with the document, which Bálint Kovács, a Reformed pastor wrote for the 10th anniversary of Csia’s death. Bálint Kovács produced two documents about his friend: a four-page, biography and a commemorative speech. The two currently known documents are the most abundant sources on the life of Lajos Csia. The text of the commemorative speech, which is longer and contains numerous comments, is published in this paper. Additional information provided by the biography is embedded in the text in square brackets. The author’s recollection is particularly authentic thanks to the firsthand data based on their conversations and Csia’s correspondence with others preserved by Bálint Kovács.
