Abstract

Full historical research of Gyula Bary’s life path and activities after 1944 has not been done until today. He was the senior pastor and regional representative of the Transcarpathian Reformed Church (TRC), Dean of the Church County of Bereg. The study reconstructs the service of the former Reformed Church leader in chronological order, from the entry of the Soviet troops into Transcarpathia until Bary’s death. In the course of this process, the study presents the ambivalent and complicated situation, in which the Reformed people of the region found themselves after the annexation of the territory to the Soviet Union. Gyula Bary was the head of the TRC only until the end of 1949. However, this was exactly the period when it was decided for the Reformed denomination, which was with its ninety thousand members very small from the perspective of the Soviet empire, whether they could remain with their traditions or they would possibly be merged and assimilated into the umbrella organization of the Evangelical Christian-Baptists, already recognized in the Soviet Union at that time. Therefore, the survival of the TRC after 1944 was largely due to the dean of Bereg, Gyula Bary who represented stability and traditions in the transitional period after the war, and who took a pragmatic approach to his decisions and actions in the interests of his Reformed Church.
