Abstract
This case study focuses on the use of footnotes in translation of culture-specific items (CSIs). The aim of the analysis in Frank McCourt's Teacher Man memoir, and its translations to Croatian and Hungarian is to explore the types of CSIs when the translator uses footnotes in Croatian translation, and to examine the translation operations and strategies used in the Croatian and Hungarian texts. Furthermore, it will also reflect on the function of the footnote in the translation of CSIs in the Croatian translation. The results show how in the Croatian translation the translator adds footnotes for realia, proper names, slang, and intertextual elements, as well as for foreign words, most often combined with retention or direct translation, and there is an almost exclusive foreignization in the translation of CSIs paired with footnotes. In the Hungarian translation realia are translated mostly in a domesticating way, while the translation of proper names shows foreignization. The translator's usage of the footnote in the examined corpus expands the reader’s cognitive environment for the contextual effect.
