Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to examine the complex and multifarious connections between music and text, words and music, or with a term introduced originally by musicologist Lawrence Kramer, ’melopoetics’. Several composers, poets and philosophers throughout history dealt with this subject, the priority, role, importance and relationships of words or music, including Hegel, Kierkegaard, Adorno, and composers ranging from Gluck and Mozart through Wagner, who devoted a whole book to this topic, to musicians like E. T. A. Hoffmann and Richard Strauss.
