Abstract
The use of idiomatic expressions (also known as phrasemes) represents the highest level of language proficiency. In this study, I consider figurative expressions, phrases, collocations of at least two words, sayings and proverbs to be phrasemes. My aim is to investigate how the translator uses phraseme corresponding procedures in translating a colloquial English source language text with a psychological approach into Hungarian. I conducted a contrastive text analysis. On the basis of the translation procedures, I identified five phraseme corresponding procedures: phraseme survival, phraseme transformation, phraseme appearance, paraphrasing and phraseme disappearance. I am looking for the translator's preferred and least preferred procedures. I support my quantitative results with linguistic examples. My research has two aims: first, to formulate hypotheses about the procedures of phraseme correspondence, and second, to test whether the research method is suitable for analysing a larger corpus.
