Abstract

Russian translation studies played a major role in the history of universal and Eastern European translations in the twentieth century. The traditions of Russian linguistics in the 18th‒19th centuries laid the foundations for the theoretical opinions by starting from Lomonosov, which connected the very nature of translation with the theory of translation, the systematization of its methods, tools, and structural descriptions. Jakobson, Fyodorov, Svejcer, Recker, Vinogradov, Barhudarov, Komisarov, and others represent the theorists of the Russian line of European translation studies in the second half of the twentieth century. While they were obviously influenced by the universal translation theory trends that gained momentum in the 20th century, they drew much from the work of Russian theoretical linguists of earlier centuries. At the same time, they paved the way for the newer foundations of translation studies with their work.
