Abstract

This paper based on the autobiographies by 38 church intellectuals in the Reformed Church County of Szatmár in 1837–1838 explores the education and careers of intellectuals. The length of the autobiographies varies from a quarter-page sketch to a multi-page memoir-like description. We analyse the contemporaneous perception of the careers of teachers and pastors, their relation to each other and their interoperability. In the first half of the 1800s, teaching 2 or 3 years in a rural school was a natural part of the Hungarian Reformed college education. Often, the same person performed the job duties of a pastor and a teacher, thus, this ’dual burden’ meant a significant difficulty. Finally, we highlight the elements in the autobiographies that reveal details about the lifestyle of Hungarian rural church intellectuals at the time.
