Abstract
István Miskolci Csulyak left behind several important and informative ego documents. The most important one is a long and very detailed autobiography in Latin. The text, which concentrates primarily on his family life – his six marriages and children – tells us also about how, after his studies abroad, primarily in Heidelberg, the young man who was first preparing to become a teacher, finally became a pastor, and what difficulties he had to face at his various places of service. From 1629 on, he became the dean of the Calvinist Church County (Diocese) of Zemplén, with full episcopal authority. He also left a considerable amount of official documentation for posterity, many of which were found to enhance the knowledge of church historians. This study also proposes to collect further pastoral and pedagogical ego-documents, written before 1800, in order to deepen our knowledge of our ecclesiastical past.
