Abstract
Our research focuses on historical and linguistic aspects of botanical taxonomy. The study of plant names in texts written in different languages facilitates the professional communication of specialists speaking different languages, but it also provides a useful tool for translators working with horticultural texts. Our approach is meant to study aspects related to the spelling and usage peculiarities of plant names, as well as translation matters of species names and cultivar names. We aim to cover aspects related to the history of botanical taxonomy, taking a look at the emergence and spread of botanical works in Hungary. All these aspects are explored with the purpose of offering a short overview of the history of plant names and their status and situation in translational contexts. We also try to hint to the echoes of Hungarian botanists’ contribution upon the Romanian specialized literature.
