Abstract

The social movements taking place in the early 1900s paved the way for the legal settlements affecting farm labourers following the earlier ones of 1876 and 1898. Ignác Darányi, the socially conscious Minister of Agriculture, submitted bills to Parliament concerning the legal relationships of farmers and farm labourers and the state sponsorship of worker’s cottage building in April 1907. After lengthy debates Law No. 45 of 1907 was passed which settled the legal relationship between landowners and farm labourers. Article 29 of the same law aimed at improving the living conditions of farm hands, while Law No. 46 of 1907 did the same for day labourers, by sponsoring cottage building projects. The paper examines the practical realization of the so-called labourers’ law on the Vép-Szőllős-Pecöl entailed estate of the Erdődy family, based on building plans, budgets, property inventories and builder’s reports. This will provide a picture of the social conditions of the property before the enactment of the law and the availability of finances needed for the reconstructions, which informs of the management of the estate as well.
