Abstract
The Thökölys and the Esterházys were linked by many ties: family, political and ownership. The Thököly family lost power and property in the Kingdom of Hungary in the 1670s, yet - thanks to the family’s Transylvanian inheritance - Imrich Thököly became a political figure at the end of the decade, rivalling Palatine Paul Esterházy in his power. Their conflicting political positions and Esterházys jealousy affected their personal lives and families. The two men and brothers-in-law probably never even met in person. Paul Esterházy eventually outlived his 22 years younger brother-in-law, unaware that the survival of the ducal branch of the Esterházy family would only be possible thanks to the Thököly family, in the person of the son he had with Eva Thököly, Joseph Esterházy.
