Abstract
The first holy communion is a milestone in the religious life of a Catholic believer, so preparing for it and doing it well is a cornerstone of religious education. In France, in the first half of the 19th century, the custom of celebrating first holy communion in an emotional and detailed way developed. In the 1840s, the desire for a solemn first communion also appeared in Hungary, where it was believed to be a useful means of winning over young people in an increasingly unchurched society by raising the devotion of the child's soul. But the ceremonial order of first communion in Hungary had not yet been worked out, and was therefore one of the points of the national synod of 1848. Proposals for this were made both in the Catholic press and in the district and diocesan councils. These were the basis for the ceremonial order we know today. The subject of this study is entirely new basic research.
