Abstract
The paper discusses how the Romanians of Szeklerland, or more precisely, the various Romanian actors who speak and act on their behalf, see themselves. The main question of the paper concerns the discursive frames in which the Romanian public has been talking about the Romanian community in Szeklerland since the end of 1989. Based on the recurring themes, I identified the following five discursive and self-representational categories: the nationstate, the civic, the spiritual, the modernizing, and the historical. In the first category, the Szekler Romanians are represented as local representatives and pillars of the Romanian nation-state; in the second, as a community at risk and discriminated against; in the third, as a local support of Orthodox Christianity; in the fourth, as a mediator of the Romanian state’s development policy; and in the fifth, as a determining factor in the history of the region.
