Abstract
It has long been a question of debate to what extent the much-mentioned equality, the Werbőczi’s „one and the same liberty”, can be considered true of the large Hungarian nobility considerably differentiated in terms of wealth and social status. The essay analyses the relations of the noble society starting from the different usages of the word „estate” in the period, using the concepts of legal and social history. The legislation and jurisprudence concerning the nobility, the jurisdiction of the authorities and courts in the modern age reinforce the concept of legal unity, the personal political representation of the aristocracy adds some extra hue to it but does make the aristocracy a separate estate with different rights. The behavioural patterns of the different groups, on the other hand, in a certain sense reinforce the unity of the nobility as an estate to a certain extent, on the other hand, show clear evidence of the stratification within the nobility.
