Abstract
It is no longer a novelty in the field of social history that the formal abolition the system of estates did not mean the sudden disappearance of the social structure that had existed for centuries. According to some authors, ‚estate conform’ forms of behaviour continued to be an important component of everyday life in 19th century Hungarian society. This paper will explore the question of whether the legal profession, which was one of the most numerous and prestigious intellectual professions in the 19th century, was able to overcome the, traditional behavioural patterns, the “fossilised” forms of the old structures. The study presents the social context of the Hungarian legal profession through the groups of lawyers of noble and commoner and later Jewish origin, covering the phenomenon of religious sectarianism, the ‚feudal and mercantile’ types of lawyers, and one of the most important social debates of the period in legal circles, the numerus clausus.
