Abstract

The present study examines an episode in the history of the Somlyó castle in Veszprém county in 1518. The trial of the unsuccessful claimant, János Gosztonyi, bishop of Győr, took several unexpected turns within a short period of time, among which two controversial protests of the Pannonhalma convent concerning the document they had transcribed, which the bishop wanted to use as evidence, should be highlighted. The first objection is peculiar in that it prohibits the use of an authenticated document in court proceedings, but the allegations in the explanatory memorandum seemed to implicate Gostonyi in the forgery of a document. In this context, I will briefly review the significance of the charge of charter forgery, examine the legal strategy subsequently pursued by the Bishop of Győr and his opponent, Cardinal Tamás Bakóc, and also seek to answer the question whether the charter transcribed for Gosztonyi was in fact an attempt to support a non-existent legal claim.
