Abstract
The paper deem the relationship between the Catholic Church and the state in Banska Croatia and Slavonia in the 19th century. The main research question is do they cooperate and in what areas. The paper argues that at the time of the creation of modern nations and the secularization and emancipation of the state from the Catholic Church, in the Banska Croatia and Slavonia, priests were involved in public life as a consequence of Josephinism, the territorial and administrative disunity of the Croatian countries, the absence of a strong civil class, and the high lack of education and illiteracy of the still predominantly rural country. In the paper, we will also answer the question of what the relationship between the legislature and the Catholic Church was, and we will determine the laws passed in this period which relate to the Church and its position.
