Abstract

Saint Agnes of Bohemia is one of the 13th century Central and Eastern European female saints of royal origin who initiated powerful spiritual movements in Silesia, the Polish duchies and Hungary, by building hospitals, monasteries and even entering monastic orders themselves. A nun, penfriend and spiritual companion of Saint Clare, Agnes founded a male order of nursing and a female order of contemplation in her country, both of them flourished during her lifetime. She was a conciliatory voice in national internal affairs and family conflicts and led an exemplary life. Her veneration continued after her death, but her canonisation was hindered by war events. Despite this, traces of her cult can be found in sacred works from the early Middle-Ages onwards, including some with a Hungarian connection.
