Abstract

In recent years much has been written about the history of the Reformed Church in Hungary. Beyond any doubt, L. Pap’s tragic life is a specimen of faithful Reformed theologians and pastors who had to undergo much suffering in the 1950’s. It has often been reiterated that L. Pap was a theologian of international quality and the Reformed Church suffered a great loss in 1958 when he was expelled from the Reformed Theological Academy of Budapest. The study concentrates on his theological formation first in Debrecen, later in the Netherlands and in Switzerland. It enumerates his teachers and friends in Hungary and abroad, his role in theological education and in the ecumenical movement. Though his time was not favourable to publication, his studies are evaluated in light of the international research. Finally, when he had to retire and to keep silence, he also had a characteristic view of the research of his time which was communicated to the author in private conversation. The carrier was broken, but the model prevails!
