Abstract

János Victor was one of the most influential pastoral figures in the history of the Reformed Church in Hungary in the 20th century. There was hardly any area of church ministry in which he did not leave his mark, be it in home or foreign missions, youth associations, the church press, church planting, theological research, translation, text publishing, theological education, the ecumenical movement or, at the end of his life, church government. János Victor’s varied life’s work left its mark not only on the ecclesiastical reality between the two world wars, but also on the spiritual awakening and interconfessional (today we would say ecumenical) aspirations of the early 20th century and the political and social transitions after the Second World War. Our study examines the dilemma of Victor’s role in church politics during the post-war communist establishment. The paper then provides an overview of Victor’s life, theological training and activities, presenting him as an ‘interpreter’. By interpreter we refer to Victor’s literal interpreting and translating activities, but also to his work as an “interpreter of the Word of God”, his ministry as an evangelist, missionary, church planter and leader.
