Abstract

Dezső Baltazár served as bishop of the Reformed Church District of Tiszántúl between 1911 and 1936. During his career, he interpreted his position as a church leader with a political role. In the course of a few decades, he participated in the founding of political parties, drafted political programmes or changed parties 9-10 times. He sought to promote his liberal conception of church and politics within a changing party framework. In contrast, László Ravasz defined himself primarily as a preacher. He kept himself aloof from day-to-day politics, and was otherwise a conservative government party member during the Horthy era. The lesson to be drawn from the two bishops’ careers is not only their different character and role conceptions, but the deep-seated identification of two or three different types of Hungarian Calvinists. On the whole, László Ravasz and Dezső Baltazár embodied rather than shaped a Reformed spiritual type.
