Abstract

This article examines the episcopal activity of György Dési Lázár, bishop of the Reformed Church in Transylvania between 1767 and 1773. Although the canons outline the rights and responsibilities associated with this position, the question remains: how were these principles implemented in practice? The study builds on previous research on the activities of Bishops György Verestói and György Zágoni Aranka, focusing not only on their biographies but also on the episcopal institution itself. After a brief introduction to the research methods, the first chapter analyses the different patterns of how the secular leadership of the Church influenced (or did not influence) the election of bishops. The second chapter deals with the internal affairs overseen by György Dési Lázár, including the question of pastoral replenishment and church discipline. The third chapter examines the external affairs he handled, especially the difficult situation with the Habsburg administration. This detailed and source-based study is an important step towards a comprehensive study of the history of the episcopate in the Reformed Church of Transylvania.
