Abstract

Magna Hungariaról az első híradásokat koldulórendi szerzeteseknek köszönhetjük. A 13. században létrejövő ferences és domonkos szerzetesrendek egyik fő célja a térítés volt. A domonkos rend korai megtelepülése a Magyar Királyságban valószínűleg épp annak köszönhetű, hogy az országból keleti irányú térítések indíthatók. Magyaroroszági történeti feljegyzések nyomán domonkos szerzetesek értesültek a keleten maradt magyarságról, így a 13. század elején több misszió is indult a felkutatásukra. Egy bizonyos Ottó hozott hírt a keleti magyarokról, majd Julianus találta meg őket hosszas keresés után a Volga mentén. Julianus csak rövid időt töltött a pogány magyarok között, mivel értesült a mongol hódításról, így hazatért értesíteni a királyt és a pápát. Második útján már nem jutott el a keleti magyarokhoz a tatárjárás miatt. Feltehetően ő látta el információkkal a későbbi ferences rendi követeket is, akik a mongol udvarokba mentek információszerzés és térítés céljából. A ferences beszámolók csak említik Magna Hungariat (Plano Carpini, Benedictus Polonus, C. de Bridia, Rubruk), amit azonosítanak a baskírok földjével, vagy magukat a régi (keleti) magyarokat (és nyelvüket) a baskírokkal. A magyar és a baskír nyelv azonosításának nincsen történelmi alapja, ebben minden bizonnyal a kor azon felfogása tükröződött, hogy egy terület aktuális lakóit azonosították a korábbiakkal. A 14. századig megjelenik még Magna Hungaria különböző leírásokban, de leginkább közhelyként, nem valós, reális térítési célként. | The first information about Magna Hungaria came from mendicant monks. The Franciscan and Dominican orders, founded in the 13th century, main goal was converting people. Probably, the early settlement of the Dominicans in Hungary can be explained by the fact, that Hungary could be a basis of Eastern mission. The Dominican monks found in historical notes, that there were Hungarians, who did not come to Pannonia, but stayed in East, thus they started missions to find those people and convert them. A certain Otto brought news about the Pagan Hungarians, then frater Julianus found them near to the River Volga. Julianus could not stay long there, because he had learned about the Mongol invasion, thus he had to go back to Hungary to inform the Hungarian King and the Pope about the Mongols. His second journey did not reach the Eastern Hungarians, because of the invasion. Most probably, he was the one, who provided the information how to travel to East to the later Franciscan envoys to the Mongol courts. These Franciscan envoys (Plano Carpini, Benedictus Polonus, C. de Bridia, Rubruck) only briefly mentioned Magna Hungaria in their accounts. They identified Bashkiria and Magna Hungaria, and the Bashkir and Hungarian languages. There is no historical basis for the identification of the two languages, most probably the medieval perception – that is the actual habitant of a territory were identified with a previous one – reflected in it. Magna Hungaria appeared in later historical documents until the 14th century, however as a commonplace, it was not a real goal to convert the people who lived there.
