Abstract
The essay examines the development of tobacco cultivation, taking ethnocultural factors into account. The comparative agricultural history of the German and Hungarian serfs in the region is based on the technical and agro-cultural factors associated with the different ethnic groups. The main finding of the study is that in the more densely populated villages with better land specialisation tobacco growing was stronger and could be marketed through the higher proportion of Jews in the area. This was also encouraged by the weak relationship between land quality and distance from the market centre. Although the most successful tobacco farming villages were populated by Germans, this ethno-cultural specificity was mostly macro-regional and was largely due to the openness of the local Germans to tobacco growing, which created the potential for commercial development of the peasant economy.
