Abstract

Several members of the Ártándi family undeniably played significant roles in the political life of the late Jagellonian and early Szapolyai periods. Pál and Balázs Ártándi, who were executed during the government of Aloisio Gritti in 1530, are well-known figures in Hungarian historical literature. Pál Ártándi rose from a provincial landholder to become one of the country's prominent lords during the reign of Louis II, later becoming a key member of King John Szapolyai's government. By the latter half of the 1520s, he had established himself as an influential figure in the political sphere. This study seeks to explore how an individual could ascend to become a political leader of the lower nobility during the late Jagellonian era. While this paper also examines the critical factors contributing to such a rise, it does not focus on Pál Ártándi’s early career as a curial notary or his role as an official in the treasury. Instead, it emphasizes how, in line with András Kubinyi’s characterization, he engaged as a "businessoriented" nobleman in grain and livestock trade, accumulated wealth, and engaged in pledging and lending, ultimately building regional influence. This case study can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the politically active, parliamentary nobility of pre-Mohács Hungary.
