Abstract

The current essay presents the preliminary results of the research focusing on the projection of power by the Garai family of the Dorozsma genus, particularly on their choice of residence and settlement development. Primarily with the aid of diplomas and other narrative sources on estate transactions it examines the process during which the village of Gara in Valkó County, due to the conscious steps taken by members of the politically increasingly influential family, had been transformed into a multifunctional market town. After discussing the circumstances of estate acquisition (1269) and the early history of the family, the essay systematizes and evaluates the sources according to the centrality scoring system devised by Andás Kubinyi, and thus ranks Gara in the settlement hierarchy of the mediaeval Kingdom of Hungary. It presents the condition, divisions, parts and incomes of the estate in the late 15th century based on the data provided by the Garai-Szécsi land estimation of 1478.
