Abstract

The paper attempts to explore the history of a lesser known, small estate, to give an outline of the history of the ownership of its various constituent lands, as well as the mechanism of management and a description of the obligations of its serfs. The history of the Drassó-Vingárd manor could be particularly interesting as it could perfectly illustrate the diligent and concentrated policy of land acquisitions that characterized György I Rákóczi. The estates in question had been acquired by the prince for his family in three larger units, but the legal basis had always been different. The system of estate management, even though the already examined urbarials cover the period of the Kassai family ownership, displays the influence of the prince and probably of the princess as well. The administrative pressure that characterized every level of estate management can be well demonstrated by the urbarials, and the manorial officers covering themselves against each other shows that even though on the increasingly bureaucratic estate production could become more effective, the system of complicated and compulsive accounting methods had many drawbacks as well. It has also become clear that the Drassó manor was not exceptional with respect to other contemporary serf obligations. The corvée burden of serfs increased here just as anywhere else, the possibility of cash redemption decreased and the inhabitants of the manor owed their lord a wide range of obligations in kind.
