Abstract
This paper presents a semasiological, descriptive analysis of the referential structuring of noun phrases (NP) with animate/human reference in German (DEU). It utilizes the methodological framework of morphological typology to compare the data through scalar parametrizations. My goal is to establish a hierarchy of referential masculinity based on the referential gender of potential reference objects of these NPs. I define nine principles for this hierarchy, which could theoretically organize over 6,000 types on a scale. I reduce this to 57 frequent and typical value combinations, which can be classified into 10 clusters. The scale also includes over 20 gendered forms, some of which are new. The controversial generic masculine serves as the benchmark for comparing their referential masculinity.
