Abstract
Psychology, in its initial phase about 1800, borrowed not only its methodology but also its vocabulary from natural science, primarily from physics. Well-known scientific phenomena of the time – magnetism, electricity, optics and acoustics – found their way into natural philosophical, medical or literary texts as metaphors for mental processes. The trans-disciplinary character of such borrowings, a part of which had a redefined meaning, led to fundamental definitions of the new discipline. This enabled the founders of psychology to set themselves apart from the primacy of empiricism and quantifiability in accordance with a Romantic holistic view of the world on the one hand, and to assert psychological knowledge itself in the landscape of science on the other.
