Abstract
Hungarian poet, essayist, publicist, and translator István Eörsi (1931–2005) published his translations of Ernst Jandl’s poems in two separate volumes (in 1979 and 1995, respectively). The present study aims to identify the reasons for the keen and lasting interest of the homo politicus Eörsi in Jandl’s poetry, to reconstruct the translator’s idiosyncratic interpretation of Jandl, to analyze individual translations, and, finally, to raise the question of the translatability of Jandl’s poems written in „run-down language‟, with particular consideration of the traditional norms of poetry translation in Hungary, which are strictly and clearly committed to the ideal of adaptation.
