Abstract
The splitting and combining of meanings are everyday transfer operations in translation from one language to another. These operations are also common in bilingual dictionaries, however; translators employ a significantly greater number of splitting and combining techniques in their daily practice compared to what is typically found in bilingual dictionaries. This paper investigates how these operations are performed by machine translation programs. It will argue that while the machine translation programs, we used (Google Translate, DeepL) are successful in splitting meanings, they cannot cope with combining of meanings. Consequently, the level of cohesion in machine-translated target language (TL) texts is expected to be lower than that in non-translated TL texts.
