Abstract

The paper reviews the public health movement initiated by Hungarian doctors in Transylvania between the two world wars and the health policies framing this movement. Its primary question is how the Hungarian medical elite envisioned a minority biopolitics that did not fit into state structures but operated largely in parallel to them. It also examines how this biopolitics connected to the Transylvanian youths’ Christian-social movement, which embraced the ideology of public service. Furthermore, it explores how the biological foundation of the Transylvanian Hungarian population was articulated in this movement, and how the biological component of ethnicity was reflected in these discourses through biological quality reproduction and demographic monitoring. Since controlling population growth and demographic processes were the main direction of this health policy, with infant and maternal health care being the most prominent within this framework, the paper also addresses the efforts aimed at fulfilling this task: health demonstration services and materials promoting infant and maternal health.
