Abstract
Since ancient times, humanity has relentlessly pursued ways to combat the threat of infectious diseases. In the first half of the 20th century, the role of the state and local public health departments grew significantly. Alongside this, state programs for disease control, research and epidemiology were greatly expanded, including the fight against tuberculosis (TB, caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and sexually transmitted infections, such as venereal diseases.
