Abstract
The writing of this paper was prompted by the material published in Kannisto’s Vogul dictionary (KEM), primarily the reemergence of Vogul numerals giving occasion for the discussion of the problems of Vogul numerals, not for the first time. The central topic of the paper is the dating and formation of attributive vs. non-attributive numerals, and a diachronic analysis of the latter. The conclusion is that this bifurcation probably dates from PU, since both Ugric and Samoyedic languages form non-attributive ’2’ with an ancient dual morpheme, which was analogically transferred to other numerals in the same function in some languages; furthermore, within the group of Fenno-Permic languages these two types of numerals are used extensively, although the formation of the non-attributive numeral is different than in the other languages. In Vogul and partly in Ostyak different morphological devices were also used to create non-attributive numerals. Other minor points in the paper are additions to the author’s monograph on numerals (Honti 1993).
