Abstract
In the summer of 1849, in the final days of the Hungarian Revolution, the Hungarian government sought to divide the overwhelming force of the Austrian and Russian armies by offering the Hungarian crown to a member of the Tsarist family. They hoped that the power-political attraction of dynastic expansion in Central Europe would compel the allies to oppose each other, while the enforcement of the laws of 1848 (constitutional monarchy) would guarantee Hungarian national self-determination. However, the conservative solidarity of the absolutist rulers and their resentment against the „rebels” proved stronger, leading to the rejection of negotiations. Nevertheless, false rumors, baseless illusions, expectations and hopes related to the Russian „alternative” spread among the crowded troops and fleeing masses in the Southern regions, contributing to the disappointment and subsequent accusations with which they received news of the surrender at Világos.
