Abstract

In the modern world the effectiveness of ancient Egyptian wound care and the execution of truncated surgery are amazing. In addition to anatomical knowledge and wound care technigues, functional prostheses are even more impressive. In recent vears, X-ray and CT examinations have provided reliable answers to many guestions. It is clear from the modern mummy researches that in some cases their amputation's procedures were successful, particularly in relation to mining and building activities. Also prosthetics were sometimes used. Thus based on the published anthropological and archaeological material this paper analyses what the documentary evidence teaches us about successful amputations conducted in ancient Egypt and considers if it is possible to deduce the extent to which the Egyptians may have used regular prosthetics in aftercare.
