Abstract
The reformed intellectuals of Balaton Uplands played an important role in modernisation of the Hungarian agriculture and in the creation of national culture. Quite many reformed priests dealt with the innovation of viticulture and winemaking: they introduced new grape varieties and new technologies to produce wine while other reformed priests preferred to modernise cultivation or beekeeping. József Fábián (1761–1825) a reformed priest in Vörösberény and later in Tótvázsony, studied the French grape culture and published a handbook of grapery and winery in Hungarian language and also edited and published a theological paper entitled Preachers’ Quarry. His son, Gábor Fábián (1795–1877) became a well-known person as a translator, study book writer, historian and politician (also a member of parliament). He spent most of his life in Arad where he acted as a leader of the local society. Literary historian Ildikó Hubert’s study describes the less known omniary (in Hungarian: Mindenes Gyűjtemény) of the young university student of law studying in Budapest which collection can be found in one of the libraries of Arad in Romania (Bibliotheca Județeană „Alexandru Alexandru D. Xenopol”). The volume contains 82 items on 235 pages. Among the notes we can find poems, prosaic works and political texts as well. The volume bears a special interest because in 1816 when Gábor Fábián went to Debrecen he copied several poems of Mihály Vitéz Csokonai (1773–1805) a famous Hungarian poet together with other poets’ poems into the volume. (Below 10 poems he wrote the name of the poet, but he did not sign the poet’s name below other 3. The poem entitled The complaint of poor poets was not published in the critical edition of the poet’s works. In the 6th appendix of the study, we can find photocopies of the manuscript and two versions of one of Csokonai’s poems.
