Abstract

By comparing the political and religious relations between Transylvaniaand Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, it can be emphasized anddemonstrated that Transylvania was an island of religious peace in aEurope of religious intolerance. Between 1568 and 1690, culture andreligious life in the Principality of Transylvania fourished in the spirit oftolerance. With the enactment of freedom of religion, the Principality ofTransylvania became one of the most enlightened states in 16th-centuryEurope. Western Europe at the beginning of the 16th century did notknow any forms of religious tolerance. The Roman Catholic Church of thetime classifed all theological and religious views that differed from itsown as heresy, and as a sin against God, punishing followers with death.
