Abstract

The current study investigates the storage of inflected nouns in the mental lexicon of Hungarian speakers, beginner learners of Hungarian and advanced second language learners. Based on the cognitive concept of language and the assumption of holistic storage a 10-sentence-long wug-test was administered to 33 participants, who filled out a survey about nonsense words representing the main stem types found in the Hungarian language. The data show that instead of following the main ‘rules’, different – and often competing – analogies and schemas were activated among different groups influenced by type frequency and the definedness of the categories. The conclusions of this research could also be adapted into the area of language pedagogy.
