Abstract
Examining our library’s bibliographies, we find nearly twenty complete Bible translations and editions from the 18th century, including variants and typesetting versions. Of these, all but two are Protestant. The history of the translation and edition of the Hungarian Bible is recorded in three editions: 1) the 1751 Basel edition by István Pap of Szatmárnémeti; 2) the 1776 Pozsony (Bratislava) edition by Mihály Mossóczi-Institoris; and 3) the 1794 Utrecht edition by János Szombathi. Prefaces and studies at the beginning of Protestant Bibles are an essential part of historical memory. The works of their predecessors are important and worthy of mention and remembrance for their work for the benefit of the public and the faithful. Historical overviews provide insight into the knowledge of learned Bible scholars from that period, as well as the prevalence and familiarity of Bible translations and editions produced from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century.
