Abstract

The development of Hungarian children’s literature is closely linked to the political aspirations of the Reform Era and the period following the suppression of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. The previously dominant German-language children’s literature could no longer replace Hungarian-language texts, not only for linguistic reasons but also due to the lack of national themes. The declared goal of Hungarian-language texts was patriotic education. However, the increasing censorship of the 1850s did not allow cultural socialization to openly address contemporary issues and questions. In my paper, I examine texts depicting the (recent) past in Hungarian children’s magazines from the first Hungarian-language children’s magazine, Szilágyi Ferenc’s Magyar Gyermekbarát published in 1843, to the paradigmshifting Kis Lap by Ágai Adolf in 1870. I focus on how their topics and narratives evolved, what values they conveyed, and how much they resembled texts aimed at adult audiences, which actualized history as a more or less hidden system of codes.
