Abstract
A full edition and study of three 15th-century paper sheets, recovered from the binding of a 16th-century printed book, that preserve a hitherto unknown recension of the Hungarian Chronicle of the 14th century. The text, called the Oxford Chronicle, represents a new and apparently independent version, which, according to the title of the manuscript, may go back to a text dated to 1340, earlier than any known manuscript of the Chronicle to date. The Oxford Chronicle – somewhat similar to the Dubnic Chronicle, though far more extensively – unifies and harmonizes the texts of the two recensions of the chronicle compilation, the Buda Chronicle and the Illuminated Chronicle. Beyond this, it preserves a number of extra details for the study of Hungarian prehistory.
