Abstract
The legacy of Erdélyi János’s – a famous writer and the protagonist of the folk song collecting movement of the 1840s – is now kept in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. This collection contains mainly manuscripts, and not only the personal or official papers and correspondence of the writer, but also includes unique documents of others, such as original notarial deeds. One of these documents is a certified statement of Katona József Sr. signed in front of the Chief Prosecutor of the city of Kecskemét on 2 June 1840. In this authentic legal form, he offers the publishing copyrights of the works of his son, the actor and playwright Katona József Jr. who passed away on April 16, 1830 to Erdélyi János.
