Abstract

Gáspár Károli’s 1590 Bible translation was revised and published in 1908. In this edition, certain scriptural verses were printed in bold. This study provides a quantitative analysis of the vocabulary of these texts, as well as offering an interpretation of the insights from the viewpoint of historical mentality and the history of pedagogy. The study did not validate the hypothesis that the highlighted texts tended to refer to faith devoid of emotion towards God, thus demoting passages that refer to love towards God and neighbours. Although the revisions were conducted by a committee of Evangelical and Reformed theologians, few of the verses favoured by Luther and Calvin were highlighted; none of the verses in which these two authors emphasised the importance of love were highlighted. In the first half of the 20^(th) century, Sándor Csikesz, a Reformed Christian, advocated promoting charity in congregational life to eliminate ‘sects’. Upon investigating the role of love in pedagogy, Sándor Imre and Sándor Karácsony — both Reformed believers — argued that love has its limits in education. In contrast, the Evangelicals Egyed Lehoczky and István Schneller emphasised the perfection of love.
