Abstract

By presenting the standard and slang variants of the Hungarian place-name Hajdúszoboszló, the paper intends to prove that slang place-names play a unique role in the system of place-names of a language and that this special status can be observed when examining the pragmatic as well as the linguistic conditions of giving names. It can be ascertained that slang place-names either reflect the subjective impressions and emotions of the namers in connection with the indicated place, or in certain cases – as a result of a pun – the name can be so completely detached from its denotatum that to an outsider it might seem to lack motivation. Regarding slang place-names, one must pay attention to the fact that these names display strong systemic connections not only with the other place-names of the given language they are taken from, but also with place-names of other languages.
