Abstract

As elsewhere in Central Europe, the process by which the Jews of Hungary achieved equal rights was a protracted one, marked by advances and setbacks. Jewish immigration, which reached an absolute peak in the 1840s, was certainly one of the factors explaining the growing unpopularity of the cause of Jewish emancipation during that decade. However, the link between Jewish immigration and emancipation, with the former clearly working against the latter, has so far been neglected by historians. This article attempts to shed light on the dynamics of this relationship by analysing the repeated efforts of the Hungarian political elite to restrict Jewish immigration by legislative means during the last three parliamentary sessions preceding the revolution of 1848.
