Abstract

Mikortól datálható az Amerikai Egyesült Államok története? 1776-tól, amikor a Függetlenségi nyilatkozatot aláírták? 1492-től, amikor a kontinenst felfedezték? 1619-től, amikor az első rabszolgákat szállító hajót elindítják? Vagy 1630-tól, amikor az első keresztény telepesek megérkeznek, hogy felépítsék a „hegyen épült várost”? Utóbbi az amerikai kereszténységben – különösen is a keresztény nacionalista politikai mozgalomban – szignifikáns szerepet játszik, hisz az esemény köré kialakult mítosz megerősíti azt a kreált, megteremtett identitást, hogy az Egyesült Államok a kereszténység istene által életre hívott nemzet, amelynek küldetése van a világban. A tanulmány az első puritán telepesek megjelenéséről, a történetük körül kialakult mítoszról és ennek a teremtett és fenntartott speciális identitásnak a múltjáról, jelenéről és jövőjéről szól. Célja, hogy jobban megértsük azokat a történelmi és teológiai folyamatokat, amelyek folyamatosan újraértelmeződnek a társadalmi és politikai változások tükrében. | When does the history of the United States of America begin? In 1776, when the Declaration of Independence was signed? In 1492, the year the continent was discovered? In 1619, when the first ship carrying slaves was launched? Or in1630, when the first Christian settlers arrived to build the „city on a hill”? The latter plays an important role in American Christianity, particularly in the Christian nationalist political movement since the myth surrounding the event reinforces the created identity that the United States is a nation called into being by the God of Christianity with a mission in the world. This paper looks at the emergence of the first Puritan settlers, the myth that has grown up around their story, and the past, present, and future of this particular identity that has been created and sustained. Its aim is to broaden our understanding of historical and theological processes that are constantly being reinterpreted in the light of social and political change.
