Abstract

The paper focuses on a particular aspect of thirteenth century PolishHungarian relations, the relationship between King Béla IV of Hungary and Duke Władysław of Opole, and more broadly on the role of the Piast coalitions in the Bohemian–Hungarian struggle for the so-called Babenberg heritage, i.e. the Duchies of Austria and Styria. The protagonist mentioned in the title, the ruler of the Silesian Duchy of Opole-Racibórz, first sided with the Hungarian king and waged war in Moravia in 1253. A few years later, however, he appeared on the side of the Bohemian ruler, Ottokar II, in the fighting, and from the Hungarian ruler’s point of view he went from friend to foe. The present paper seeks to explore the causes and circumstances of this change of sides, as well as the personality of the Duke of Opole, with an analysis of the effects of the turbulent relations between the Piast princes of the Polish duchies. Furthermore, the events of the conflict up to the death of Władysław around 1281 are also described in the text.
