Abstract

János Horváth (1769–1835) achieved a high rank in the Catholic Church despite his lack of noble origin. He was ordained a priest in 1792, became a Canon of Veszprém in 1808, a member of the National Synod in 1822, president of the theological faculty of the University of Pest in 1826, bishop of Székesfehérvár in 1830, a royal privy councilor and an honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1832. His ecclesiastical career was complemented by scholarly activity; he was also the editor of the journal Egyházi Értekezések és Tudósítások [Ecclesiastical Dissertations and Reports] in 1820–1824. He intended to publish an essay on the nature of imagination and its theological usefulness in 1820. Only a few-page-long manuscript and Horváth’s comments about the topic in his private correspondence remained from the essay. This paper reconstructs the diffuse aesthetic and theological traditions used by Horváth. He thought that theology and secular philosophy were not at odds with each other. Following and supplementing Kant’s philosophy, he placed religion within the framework of pure reason and put imagination in the transmission of faith. By analyzing Horváth’s concepts, a path of Catholic enlightenment can be revealed.
