Abstract

The inquiry into the semiotic characteristics of Russian newspapers and magazines of the 1880s reveals universality as a key communicative strategy and the encyclopaedia as a dominant form of content organization in the emerging mass media of the time. This exploration opens the way for an interdiscursive approach to Chekhov’s early poetics, emphasizing the need for closer analysis of a group of short texts that were typologically classified as cycles of aphorisms and witty sayings. Structural features of these texts point toward everyday speech genres, which Chekhov uses to link individual utterances through the cognitive framework of a list. The list is seen as a cognitive act that imposes new order on a text by separating, unifying, and recombining its elements in a distinctive way. By encouraging the reader to engage with its loose coherence, the list becomes a diagrammatic sign representing a process in life or in consciousness, thus revealing its narrative potential in Chekhov’s later poetics as well.
